It was just announced at SI.com that The Who will be the halftime show for the NFL Super Bowl in Miami, FL. Long overdue and a huge honor for the band!
From SI.com--
Who wants some breaking news? Who wants to know who is performing at halftime of Super Bowl XLIV on Feb. 7 in Miami? Who wants me to shut up and just get to it already? Well, if you haven't figured it out by now, according to a source, The Who will take the stage during the NFL's championship game. Reached for comment, an NFL spokesperson said, "When we have something to announce, we'll announce it." I can assure you I'm not just writing this because Tori Praver rocked this body paint in Sports Illustrated's 2007 Swimsuit Issue, which was billed as "The Music Issue." The Who will be performing at the Super Bowl.

God, I hope this isnt true! Don't get me wrong but I dont want to see them embarrass themselves in front of a billion people.
It happened at Live Aid and The Who Rock Honors was less then stellar and today Roger and Pete both have problems with their voices. They are not on tour and if history repeats itself they will not rehearse for this show similar to the last two I mentioned. I don't want this to be the last thing everone remembers about The Who!
This should have happened in the early 2000's not now..
Please don't be true!

IF this is true, here's your three songs:
"ICE"
"Baba"
"MG"
"WAY" would have to be edited for the "F Bomb", and "WGFA" eats up 10 minutes of showtime.

Report: The Who will rock Super Bowl XLIV
By MJD
SI.com's Hot Clicks breaks the news this morning that The Who will be performing during halftime of Super Bowl XLIV. There was some earlier talk of Bon Jovi playing the gig, but I guess that didn't work out.
Opinions will vary, as they always do. Optimistically, I do believe that The Who has some songs that will make for a fun halftime show -- "Baba O'Riley", "Won't Get Fooled Again", "Who Are You", and "The Seeker", to throw out a few. I'm also assured by Jamie Mottram, who's seen them perform live recently, that The Who can "still bring it."
Myself, I've accepted that the Super Bowl Halftime show just isn't aimed at entertaining me. Or anyone under the age of 40, for that matter. It's aimed at entertaining (or at least not offending), the slightly older, extremely mainstream audience that the biggest television event of the year draws. Four of the last five Super Bowl Halftime acts have been white males in their late '50s or older.
I'm cool with it, but I'm anxious to get everyone else's thoughts. Would you rather have someone a little more current, or are you cool with Roger Goodell only picking bands that are represented in his personal CD collection?

I just died. I hope this is true.
How did they embarass themselves are the Rock Honors? They were epic like always.

I'm here (thewho.com) because I'm procrastinating.

I didnt say they embarrased themselves but it seemed like a pretty flat performance. I base that opinion from being at the show.... I love the band. I just don't want to see it go horribly wrong and that is more likely than something spectacular..... I've been to a show of Roger's this year at Chicago HOB and it was good. However, he can't hit the high notes. My fear is he's going to do the scream in WGFA or any song for that matter and he won't have enough of a voice left to finish their 20 minutes.... In a normal Who show at their age that's fine but this is the Super Bowl with a Billion people watching and critiquing their performance.... I would just rather it not happen!

The Who won't do a medley (IMO).
"WGFA" full on, live , would be about 10 minutes.
There's no way the NFL, and it's sponsers are gonna go for one song, especially the way The Stones (SB-XL), Prince (SB-XLI), and Springsteen/ E Street (SB-XLII) tore it up for those particular Halftime shows.
You can toss "WAY" out of the mix. Unless Pete agrees to censor his work (the "F-Bomb") which I highly doubt, that cancels out another song.
I threw my three up on the "Who play the SB" thread.
Keeping it under 15 minutes, I'm still rolling with "ICE", "Baba", "MG".
At least that's how I see it.
Then again, it wouldn't be the first time I'd be wrong.
Peace, Foadlom

I think they should play "My Generation", segue into "Won't Get Fooled Again", and call it a night. And they'd better bring their A-game with a billion people watching.

I'm sorry you just died darlin', I really enjoyed your posts... I'm with ya AOA, some of us didn't get the luxury of attending Roger's concerts and I don't care if they gotta roll the boys up in wheelchairs, I'll take my 'Oo when I can get 'em and if they are intent on touring later with Floss, etc they will most likely pique interest in the future by rockin' it out.OMG it just hit me - the Who AND the Super Bowl? And Peyton Manning winning both the SB and MVP? (shout out to my NFL thread buddies ) Now I'M gonna die...!

This will be interesting for a lot of reasons. Pete might not be able to speak at all. He peppers every conversation live to the audience with the F bomb. Roger had quite a few himself last night in Montclair. The centerpiece of their set would have to be Baba, especially since it is the song at every sporting event you go to.
Pete and Roger both have cited BBE as their best song. That one will put Roger to the test. And either Pinball Wizard or See Me Feel Me has a great shot too. Most of the general public associates Tommy with The Who.
A long shot would be I Can See For Miles. It was a 60's hit and Roger is tearing it up these days. By the way , Scott Devours could give Zak a run for his money.
I hope it's not ICE, Baba and a new tune from Floss. Bruce already shilled Working on a Dream this year.

Somebody mentioned to me that they didnt like the stones playing "rough justice," they wanted to hear a classic instead. to be honest, itd be the equivelant of playing fragments. they just gotta stick to song that go over well already.
if the time was there, theyd just play the concert for new york set

Maybe this is why Rog is getting his voice in tune?
Or maybe he is 'auditioning' to get them the gig?
Or maybe he is trying to figure out the best scheduling: Do they do a show the night before? Or 2 nights before with a night off?

The Stones were on a tour schedule, and played on February 1, 2006 in Baltimore as a "warm up" (if you will) for their SB-XL halftime gig.
Springsteen played at the Obama Inaugural Celebration (1/18/09)at the Lincoln Memorial two weeks befre doing his performance at SB-XLII.
It wouldn't be out of the ordinary for The Who to do a private show for some coffers as part of the SB-XLIII halftime tie-in.
BTW, Springsteen edited his song down to fit the NFL SB performer time allotment.
Here's the time stat line taken from backstreets.com.
http://www.backstreets.com/setlists2009a.html
Tenth Avenue Freeze-out (4 minutes)
Born to Run (3 minutes, 40 seconds)
Working on a Dream (1 minute, 40 seconds)
Glory Days (3 minutes, 20 seconds)
By contrast, The Stones were able to play two of their three hits, with a new song ("Rough Justice") that was part of the 2005 NFL "Kickoff". In both instances the word "cocks" was edited from the line "Once upon a time I was your little rooster But am I just one of your cocks" (During "Kickoff 2005", ABC hit the "mute" button from a montage of NFL images, shown with "live" Stones {taped a week prior in Detroit}, while NBC bailed on Sir Mick's mic during their SB Halftime gig.)
giantsfan alluded to CBS showing the game, who happens to be the "CSI" franchise. If The Who plan on "tagging" their set as a "CSI" Medley, (say the way Springsteen did his set), I can see it, and "get it". But I highly doubt that Townshend will allow his work to "butchered" by network censors. Conceivably you could get "WAY", just don't expect it "full on".
Peace, Foadlom

A twelve minute medley of all their greatest songs might be really cool. Think "My Generation" from Live at Leeds, but with all Who hits instead of those other riffs.

Wow--This would surely be the one and only time and reason I'd tune in to any part of the Super Bowl! I can't imagine they'll really do it? Well, the money of course.
Listening to you, I get the music
Gazing at you, I get the Heat
Following you, I climb the mountains
I get excitement at your feet

It is a great idea for the Who to play, but as we know them, they will play the usual "tour the force" Who Are you, Wont Get Fooled Again, Baba O Riley or Behind Blue Eyes... the same songs they played at the New York 9/11 Concert and Live Aid.
In a personal point of view, i think they should take the brief moment to play songs that will generate interest in the young ones and send the old fans to Mars: Songs like My Generation, Can See For Miles, Long Live Rock, See Me Feel Me, Join Together, or the perennial "tour the force" Baba O Riley.

I think Zak is terrific too. Having seen Roger's back up band twice in a month I was very impressed with the drummer. He brings an energy and youth to the band that is missing with Pino and Zak. I enjoyed his attempt at twirling the sticks a la Keith during the pauses on Young Man Blues. The audience seemed to respond to Devours more because the rest of the band is Simon, already part of the band, Frank, who fills in for Pete, and a young bass player and keyboard player who both are good but not as outstanding as the drummer. All I am saying is that Scott Devours stepped up big time and is not a Keith Moon parody, but truly a fine drummer. By the way when you saw Scott what did you think ?

Not impressed with Devours, comparatively I have always been very impressed with Zak and Pino. I would be very disappointed if they had the lesser musicians Roger has on his tour rather than Zak and Pino. But then again, I have never really seen the point of having Simon either.

Apparently, the who playing at half time MAY not happen and pure speculation accordingly to both the NFL and the band. Too bad, this would be a missed opportunity for a new generation of fans.

So SI.Com got the scoop it appears. Well done. So it's on then. I hope the fellas are gonna work hard between now and January. I don't expect anything but the best if they are going to take this on. It's a shame this didn't happen years ago when the band was fresher and John was still with us. But it is what it is. A great honor and fine tribute to a band who is only half intact. Kick ass fellas we will be watching you.
If all goes well some gigs in the States would be very very timely soon thereafter PETE!
The one thing that disgusts me about The Who is the way they smashed through every door in the uncharted hallway of rock 'n' roll without leaving much more than some debris for the rest of us to lay claim to...

I was so psyched when I heard that yesterday. Hopefully the Patriots will be playing in the Superbowl this year again. Love them, but love the Who even more. Saw The Who at Mohegan Sun last year and they were AMAZING! So amazing, they still inspire me to keep playing in rock bands. You're never too old to rock and roll and from the first note, they blew me away. I have no doubt whatsoever that they will be anything less than incredible.
ROCK ON!

Oooooh nooooo! Say it ain't so Pete!
First Springsteen last year and now The Who. God, I hope they are getting one heck of a pay day for this Sell Out. I really hate to be a naysayer, but in my opinion this is the absolute worst thing any true artist can do in terms of damaging their credibility as an artist. I have been a fan of The Who since I was 13 years old. One of the first albums I ever bought was Quadrophenia. I have always loved The Who and up until this I would say that by most standards they had done fairly well in terms of not selling out to the man, but this is one of the worst things they could have ever done. Like I said, I really hope they are getting awesome paycheck for this one.

I've heard some criticism here and elsewhere about The Who doing this. It seems a lot of it comes from people who have never seen The Who. I guarantee they will bring their "A" game. My only concern is that the NFL and Bridgestone will want to choreograph the show too much. Just let them play and they will surprise the naysayers and blow that crowd and audience away.

This is coming from someone who isn't sure this is a great move. If they had done this up to 2002ish I'd have been very excited. Now I'm a little nervous. Roger doesn't hit the high notes very well. And Pete sometimes doesn't bring the heat like he used to. And for good reason they're 65 years old!! With that being said, I will still go see the Who as long as they are on the road as I love the music and they still put on a great show in my opinion. I would have just been much more enthusiastic about this performance if it had come about 6 years ago when they were still firing on all cylanders. I also hope they do a couple of warm up shows before the super bowl.
I'm just curious, how does them playing at the super bowl equal them selling out? This performace will be seen by more people than any other Who show. Pete and Roger have always said that anything to get their music heard is worth doing. I would think Pete letting his songs be used in advertising is a bigger sell out than playing the superbowl. And even with the ads that use Petes music, that's his right and I'd never rip him for it.

I guess I see it as "selling out" because in my opinion the Super Bowl is the very pinnacle of American excess and commercialism. Maybe, you folks don't see it that way and that is fine, but I really hate to see any true artist whore themselves out to such a horrible example of American excess for whatever reason. Does anyone really think that this performance is going to increase their record or merchandise sells by any appreciable amount?
